Open Enrollment is your annual opportunity to review your coverage for the upcoming year. If you are a retiree and you don’t plan to make changes for 2022, no action is needed—your current selections will roll over for the upcoming year at the new rates, as long as you remain eligible for the plan.

If you do make changes, they will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

Keep in mind your next opportunity to make changes to your benefits will be next year’s Open Enrollment unless you experience a qualifying life event.

What’s Staying the Same for Retirees in 2022

All of the same health plans will be available for 2022. This includes two Medicare Advantage plans and two Medicare Supplement plans for retirees and dependents who are Medicare eligible, and the same four plans for retirees who are not yet Medicare eligible (the same plans as active employees).

The same dental and vision plan are also available.

When to expect new plan ID cards

Medical carriers are now required to include plan deductibles and out-of-pocket maximum limits on ID cards. Beginning Jan. 1, 2022, you may access a digital copy of your ID card in your member portal. If you enroll in a new plan, you will receive an ID card in the mail by Jan. 1, 2022. All Health Net members will be issued new physical ID cards. Delta Dental and VSP don’t issue cards at all.

Infertility benefit enhancements

Beginning Jan. 1, pre-65 retirees and covered dependents will no longer need a diagnosis of medically infertile to quality for infertility benefits and services under all Stanford medical plans. This enhancement provides LGBTQ+ retirees and their spouse or domestic partners with access to infertility services. This change does not apply to Medicare plans because they are governed by the federal Department of Health and Human Services and administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Help: Making Changes in My Benefits

Having trouble logging in? Here are some helpful hints.

  • Retirees: Can't remember your login to My Benefits? Your username is your SUNet ID (if it's fewer than 8 digits, add zeros to the front to make it 8 digits). If you can't remember your SUNet ID, call the University HR Service Team at 877-905-2985 or 650-736-2985, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT (except during holidays).
  • How do I know if I'm done making elections? You can make elections as many times as you need to during Open Enrollment. The My Benefits portal will have a yellow bar for the Open Enrollment event posted for the entire three-week period. When you hit "Submit" you will see a screen that shows your Confirmation Number. You should also receive an email confirmation within 24 hours. Because you can return and make changes multiple times until Open Enrollment closes, you will receive a confirmation email every time you hit "Submit."
  • Don't wait until the last day! Due to the high volume of requests that occur during this time, the University HR Service Team has enlisted support from an off-site team to ensure continuous high-quality service and fast response times. By logging into the My Benefits portal, you can submit an online request for assistance. Or you can call: 877-905-2985, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
