Dr. Teresa Kwamboka Abuya is a Lecturer in the Department of Computing Sciences at Kisii University, Kenya, with over 13 years of teaching, research, leadership, and innovation experience in higher education. She holds a Diploma in Technical Education from Kenya Technical Trainers College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology, a Master of Science in Computer Systems, and a PhD in Information Technology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). She previously served as the Examination Coordinator, Programmes Coordinator and Chairperson of the Department of Computing Sciences for six years, where she provided academic and administrative leadership while contributing to curriculum development, quality assurance, and programme coordination She teaches and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Mining and analytics, Image Processing, Software Engineering, and Distributed Systems. Her research interests span Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Medical Image Processing, Natural Language Processing, ICT for Development, Digital Transformation, and other emerging technologies that address societal challenges.
Dr. Abuya has authored two academic books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in internationally recognized journals, with research contributions in medical image denoising, cancer prediction, deep learning, distributed systems, digital learning technologies, and AI-enabled healthcare. She has attracted competitive research funding, including a KSh 5 million National Research Fund (NRF) grant and a Kisii University Internal Research Grant, and holds patents and copyrights for innovations in artificial intelligence, medical devices, blockchain-enabled e-governance, and intelligent healthcare systems. In recognition of her innovative work, her invention, Vision Link AI Assistant, won the Gold Medal at the 15th International Invention Fair in the Middle East (IIFME) in Kuwait, placing among the top innovations showcased from over 150 inventions worldwide. Beyond academia, she is actively involved in youth empowerment through Ajira Digital, Women TechMakers, Digital Playbook Africa, and other digital skills initiatives that have equipped hundreds of young people with employability and entrepreneurship skills. She has also served on numerous university committees, national Boards of Management, and professional organizations, while mentoring students, supervising postgraduate research, promoting intellectual property and innovation, and advancing responsible AI for sustainable development.
