Background Information (History and Heritage Studies)

The Department of History and Heritage Studies is one of the established academic departments
in Kisii University. It was created in 2011 , under the Kisii University College which would
become Kisii University in 2013.Since then, it has taken a lead in teaching, learning and
research. It has graduated students in both undergraduate and post graduate programs to its
present. The department has experienced teaching staff, led by Dr. Evans Nyamwaka, a Kenyatta
University trained historian as the chair.
Our quality programs are geared towards arousing a deep interest and understanding, among
students, of the evolutions, growth and spread of human societies and cultures world over. The
Department,s research interests centres on African history, European and American histories and
other world nations as well. Colonialism and anti-colonial struggles, social history ,cultural
history, museum and conservation history, medicine, archaeology, political economy, military
history, science and technology, historical research ,gender studies among others ,are also of
interest in our department as we aspire to understand emerging issues in the modern era.
