Anakalo Alfred Shitandi has an MSc and PhD from SLU-Uppsala and is a Full Professor in the department of Biological Sciences in Applied Microbiology with over 25 years of academic and research leadership. His core research paradigm focuses on bridging Indigenous Knowledge and Western science to design sustainable bioactive and probiotic functional foods from local crops, dynamically coupled with water quality and aquatic ecosystem monitoring for holistic public health integration. He has advanced training in Strategic Management – Beijing/Shanghai, China; Nutritional Epidemiology – Nordic School of Public Health; Biotechnology – Hebrew University, Israel; Bioethics – St. John’s Hospital, India and Biomedical Statistics – Denmark strenthening his systems approach to science. Beyond an administrative track record that includes serving as an Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor and founder Director/Registrar Research ( 2012-2023), he shapes regional higher education standards as an appointed Food Microbiology Peer Reviewer for the Commission for University Education (CUE) Kenya and an International Reviewer for the Namibian National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and a technical expert for the Kenya Bureau of standards. An expert in large-scale resource mobilization, he has secured over 400 million KES in competitive international funding from major donor networks to support sustainable African development and health equity. Key funders included the European Union, USDA, Swedish Institute, SIDA, South African Water Council, DANIDA, OPCW, and FAO. He has achieved a ResearchGate Score of 34.45 paired with over 45,820 institutional reads and peer downloads. He has published 85+ peer-reviewed scientific papers and 3 academic book chapters spanning food-water systems, biochemical ecology, and local fermented food matrices and has one patent. He is an Ad-Hoc Peer Reviewer – African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND) and a scientific reviewer – Microbiology Research Journal International. He has successfully supervised 22 PhD and MSc candidates through to completion in advanced microbiology, food biotechnology, and food safety. He is passionate on internationalization of education and has been a research fellow for NAFSA a leading global Internationalization Network.
