The Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Media aims at training and producing teachers who are critical and creative thinkers to enable them respond adequately and appropriately to matters of curriculum, instruction and educational media in dynamic world of education. The department teaches and trains undergraduate students in curriculum, instruction and media, including instructional methods and techniques in respective subjects and offers a postgraduate Diploma in Education, Masters in Curriculum, Instruction and Media, and PhD in Curriculum and Instruction or Instruction and Media. It is envisaged that the trained teacher should be progressive professionally and academically in subject content and on curriculum development, design, curriculum innovation, implementation and evaluation; conduct instruction in ways that make it enjoyable and interesting for the learners; and be motivated to use and integrate appropriate media in the ever-changing instructional approaches as informed by practice and knowledge. Furthermore, the department is responsible for conducting micro-teaching as part of subject methods of the teaching subjects on offer and subsequently supervises and assesses student-teachers during their teaching practice period. It is envisaged that the teacher is appropriately equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes that meet the demands of the ever-changing world in teaching, research and curriculum leadership.
The department boasts of highly qualified instructors; ten full-time lecturers assisted by a host of part-time lecturers. The lecturers are ably engaged in scientific research and community service engagement activities. Those who hold PhD supervise postgraduate students.
The interaction amongst the students, lecturers and knowledgeable dedicated staff provides a solid foundation for students’ professional and academic growth and success.
