Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities among Urban Migrants in the Lake Victoria Basin and Great Lakes Region
Kenya lead researcher: Dr. Peter Gutwa Oino, PhD
The Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategies (CLARS) project, funded
at $3.14 million from 2024 to 2027, seeks to reduce socio-economic
vulnerabilities and enhance resilience to climate change for migrants and host
communities in five cities: Kampala, Mwanza, Eldoret, Detroit, and Hamilton.
Dr. Peter Gutwa leads the Kenyan segment of this interdisciplinary research,
focusing on gender-sensitive climate adaptation strategies for climate
migrants, especially women and girls in Kenya. The project combines participatory
action research and climate knowledge exchange to address vulnerabilities and
build strategies for more resilient urban migration responses in East Africa.
