Assessment of Indigenous knowledge and utilization of medicinal plants in management of COVID-19 in western Kenya and Harmful algal blooms in Lake Victoria
Lead Researcher: Dr. Bethwell Owuor, PhD
This research in Biotechnology focuses on utilizing indigenous African
plant species for medicinal purposes, specifically in combating diseases like
COVID-19 and monitoring harmful algal blooms in Lake Victoria. The project
combines computational tools, machine learning, and next-generation sequencing
technologies to explore traditional pharmacopoeia and analyze aquatic
environmental DNA. This research, funded by major international organizations,
is contributing to global health initiatives and advancing the understanding of
biodiversity and its potential for sustainable health solutions.
