ASA Network Research and Postdoc Research Grants Program – Africa

The African Snakebite Alliance is pleased to the Network Research and
Postdoc Research Grants Program to improve health outcomes for people affected
by snakebite envenoming, by addressing evidence gaps in policy and practice in
Africa.
Priority Areas
§ The proposals submitted to this call are expected to address at least
one of the following activities in scope:
§ Research activities
related to burden aim to:
§ Reduce gaps between true SBE incidence and available data
§ Identify hotspots (data capture, mapping and surveillance)
§ Assess long term consequences (including economic burden) of snakebite envenoming for society and health care system
§ Research activities related to treatment aim to:
§ Optimize antivenom distribution and/or the supply chain
§ Evaluate options to decentralize treatment to community level
§ Improve access to healthcare facilities
§ Optimize rehabilitation and quality of life after the bite
Funding Information
§ In this call, two different types of proposals will be funded:
§ Three Network research proposals, which should be for 2 years with a
maximum budget of £100,000 per proposal
§ Two Postdoc research proposals, which should be for 2 years with a
maximum budget of £50,000 per proposal
Eligibility Criteria
§ Network research proposals (£100,000):
§ The lead applicant on the proposal should hold a PhD degree in a field
relevant to the application.
§ Applicants other than the lead applicant can participate as
co-applicants (max 5).
§ The lead applicant and co-applicants are based at institutions in at
least two different African countries.
§ The lead applicant, co-applicants and collaborators form a
multidisciplinary team (eg epidemiology and social sciences). Organizations listed as collaborator contribute to the proposal and
the team without being eligible to receive funding.
§ To be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity, lead applicants
must be based at a university, research institute, or research-focused NGO in
Africa.
§ Postdoc research grant (£50,000):
§ The lead applicant should have obtained their PhD degree less than 5
years before the application deadline or should be able to demonstrate their
PhD degree will be obtained within a year after the application deadline.
Career breaks to a maximum of three years will be taken into consideration.
§ or the lead applicant holds a Medical Degree/ Veterinary Degree or
equivalent qualification with between 2 and 5 years of demonstrable research
experience.
§ The project should be run in at least one African country.
§ Applicants other than the lead applicant can participate as
co-applicants (max 3).
§ The lead applicant, co-applicants, and collaborators form a
multidisciplinary team (eg epidemiology and social sciences)
§ To be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity, lead applicants
must be based at a university, research institution or research-focused NGO in
Africa.
