Information is an important resource in the day-to-day operations of individuals, organizations and society. The world has evolved to an age where information technology and information explosion are here with us. Thus, in taking cognisance of the rapidly changing media, communication and information sciences and technology environment, the faculty attempts to be proactive in developing, teaching and doing research in new media, communication and information technologies, particularly in areas such as e-democracy, e-government, e-commerce, and e-learning as well as studies on analysis of media audiences and media effects, especially on the role of the media and information technology in public health and well-being, social welfare and general quality of life.
The faculty also embraces the idea that the media and technology can be unwittingly and deliberately used to influence social behaviour patterns and therefore will attempt to pinpoint the true nature and extent to which media and technology affects the society’s development in order to provide space for informed debates.
Media, communications, information science and technology teaching and research are dynamic fields that are developing quickly in areas of theory and methodology due to the enormous global spread, technological diversity and social significance of media and information technology. Furthermore, media (both old and new), communications and information science and technology teaching and research has become essentially interdisciplinary, with the use of applicable theories and methods from social science disciplines such as anthropology, film studies, linguistics, politics, psychology, social geography, and sociology. The faculty therefore purposes to strengthen teaching and research relationships with other faculties across the university which includes academic staff doing joint research student supervision.
Finally, thefaculty also boasts of committed academics with qualifications as well as teaching and research experience in a range of disciplines and backgrounds which comprise journalism, media, library, computer sciences, linguistics and languages, among other areas. The faculty’s ambition is to create teaching and research teams that use multi-disciplinary approaches to teaching and research that include critical and empirical analysis of media, communications, and information studies. It further aims to create knowledge and knowledgeable individuals who will contribute to public debate and inform policy on the major media and communications and information issues of the day. The faculty also encourages academic staff to serve as consultants and advisers to international organizations, governmental and non-governmental as well as media organisations. It also aims to establish a wide network with researchers in other home universities as well as abroad; together with profit and non-profit organizations in the country.
